How I Photograph My Art for Etsy (and What You Need to Do It Too)
One of the most important parts of selling art online is how you photograph it. Your art could be amazing (hi, drippy skulls!)—but if the lighting is off or the image is blurry, it just doesn’t grab attention like it should.
Over the years, I’ve figured out a simple setup for photographing my art for Etsy that doesn’t require a pro studio—just a few key tools (and a spooky cute touch, of course). Here’s a peek at my process and the gear I recommend so you can do it too!
🕯 1. Natural + Softbox Light Combo
Natural light is your best friend—but sometimes it’s not enough, especially in darker rooms (or on cloudy Buffalo days!). I use two softbox lights alongside window light to balance out shadows and bring out the details of my designs.

🖤 2. Phone Tripod + Stand
A tripod or phone stand keeps your shots consistent and eliminates blur. I love using one that has a flexible neck so I can adjust the angle for flat lays (like sticker sheets) or upright shots (like framed prints).

💀 3. On-Theme Backdrops (Drippy + Clean Options)
Your background helps tell the story of your art. I love using custom drippy backgrounds that match my spooky cute vibe—they tie the whole look together and help my products stand out while staying on-brand.
That said, clean and simple works great too! A white or black foam board is perfect if you want your art to pop without distraction, especially for listings that need a minimalist touch.

✨ Pro tip: Try both and see what fits your product’s vibe! I often switch between my drippy-themed backgrounds and clean ones depending on the piece.
🕸 4. Small Props (Optional)
Sometimes I add a few props for mood—like a black mini LED candle, a skull figurine, or a piece of spooky fabric. Just don’t overdo it—your art is the star!
👉 Bonus tip: Props are great for IG Reels, too.
🛍 Example: My Drippy Skull Art
If you scroll through my Etsy shop, you’ll see how I use this setup for everything from drippy sticker sheets to drippy ice cream skull prints to custom trading cards. A clean, well-lit photo helps customers imagine your art in their space—and that leads to more clicks and sales.
